Photography Noir. Existence

Curator – Darius Vaičekauskas

Opening: 30 November, 7.00–9.00 pm

Ex Niceta, Via Roma, 11

Open to the public: 9, 16 and 23 December and 13 January, 5.00–7.00 pm

As part of the project to revitalise the former Niceta shop, the Palermo-based publishing house 89books, in collaboration with the Lithuanian curator Darius Vaičekauskas, is presenting a new exhibition in the heart of the city at 11 Via Roma. The photography exhibition will be open to the public on the evening of the opening, 30 November from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm, and on Saturday afternoons throughout December and early January.

The exhibition, Photography Noir. Existence, showcases the works of three acclaimed photographers: Alexander Chekmenev (Ukraine), Rimaldas Vikšraitis (Lithuania) and Miron Zownir (Germany). The title borrows the cinematic term ‘film noir’, although there is almost nothing melodramatic or chic about what these photographers’ cameras have captured over the course of more than 30 years. What unites the geographically scattered photographs of these three artists is a marginalised figure at the centre of their investigation. Whether it is an American drug addict, a coal miner from eastern Ukraine or a villager from Lithuania, it is always an ordinary man left behind, abandoned and forced to face harsh reality alone.

Oleksandra Osadcha, the Ukrainian critic who wrote an introductory essay for the catalogue accompanying the exhibition and published by 89books, elaborates:

“The images created by Chekmenev, Vikšraitis and Zownir are undeniably unsettling. These photographers, who come from three distinct spheres – urban, industrial and rural – chip away at the comfort of our self-assurance and the illusion of security, silently inviting us to engage with their images.”

The Palermo public may already be familiar with the work of photographer and filmmaker Miron Zownir, whose first major Italian retrospective took place at the International Centre of Photography in Palermo in 2021. Meanwhile, the other two photographers, Alexander Chekmenev and Rimaldas Vikšraitis, will be exhibited in Italy for the first time.

The previous exhibition at the former Niceta shop took place in early September, when Mauro D’Agati’s photographic series *Bangkok Sketches* was on display in the shop windows. The exhibitions in this space are temporary in nature and are curated by photographer Mauro D’Agati and curator Kateryna Filyuk (89books).

■ Activities

89Books develops long–term publishing and research initiatives
that support photographers and artists working across contemporary image–making, bookmaking, and independent publishing practices.

Make a book with us

Founded by a photographer, 89books emerged from the desire to elevate the book as an artistic medium and to create opportunities for photographers at the beginning of their careers, as well as for those with little or no previous experience in photobook publishing. Book proposals may be submitted at any time, either as a completed dummy or as an invitation to collaborate on the development of a project from a larger body of photographic material. In the latter case, 89books works closely with the artist on image selection, editing, sequencing, and graphic design in order to shape the work into a carefully conceived publication.

Folio

Folio is a special series of 89books dedicated to the production of fast-paced publications distinguished by a cohesive design and a standard format (21 × 28 cm). Each edition is housed in a printed envelope, reinforcing the tactile and collectible nature of the object. With Folio, 89books aims to respond to photographers’ desire to produce limited-edition publications quickly, while maintaining a strong commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Folio is continuously open to submissions from artists and photographers with fully developed projects seeking
to transform their work into a carefully conceived publication.

Artists in residence

The 89Books AIR Program (Artists in Residence) supports professionals working in contemporary art, with a particular focus on photography and bookmaking. During the residency, residents may either refine an existing project with the aim of transforming it into a book, or develop new work
in the city of Palermo intended to become part of Quaderno Palermo
– a collection of impressions of the city and its inhabitants conceived in dialogue with the 89books team. The residency also seeks to question and expand the very notion of the “book,” exploring new possibilities for how photobooks can be made, structured, viewed, and experienced.
Residencies typically last two weeks. Shorter or longer stays may be arranged individually. Selected candidates receive a letter of support
to assist with applications for external funding covering travel expenses and per diems.

Quaderno Palermo

Quaderno Palermo is a special publication series dedicated to photographers’ interpretations of Palermo, a city endlessly photographed and immortalized in cinema. At once visually captivating and deeply neglected, Palermo offers a rich and layered terrain for artistic exploration. Projects may be developed independently or within the framework of the 89books Artist-in-Residence program. The intended outcome is a publication in the Quaderno Palermo series.
